Welcome back, Peter Thomas Roth!

DSC01574

No – that’s not Peter Thomas Roth.

I recently attended the re-launch of cult skincare brand PeterThomasRoth – I say re-launch because the brand was available here at Kensapothecary many, many years ago, then sadly disappeared.

During that brief period, I became a huge fan on its no-nonsense products – favourites included the Anti-Aging Cleanser, Botanical Buffing Beads scrub and, particularly, the Oil-Free Sunblock. I took the Sunblock with me on my honeymoon at the Maldives, and it saved my skin! I also loved that its cleansers, scrubs and toners came in a great size (250ml), and that all the scrubs can be used for the face and body. I’m not alone, famous fans include Bill Clinton, Heidi Klum, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ben Stiller and Hillary Swank.

Skinology now has the rights to PTR here, and have opened a counter at Robinsons.

Kelvin Tan Li-Wei, the bubbly Head of Business Development of PeterThomasRoth Malaysia gave us a quick presentation on the brand, but more importantly, talked about the products you should be trying out.

“Apply right after your cleanser, preferably the Anti–Aging Cleanser! The peptides and neuro-peptides in this serum not only firms, lifts and assist in collagen production in ‘aged-skin’, but also assist in preserving the youthfulness of your current skin condition and regulates the overall condition and health of the supporting structure of your skin. Even if you are younger, use it as it makes the skin stronger and supple. Use it twice a day, am/pm.”

The Cucumber Gel Masque

Peter-Thomas-Roth-Cucumber-Gel-Masque[1]

“My favourite product! This mask is ultra-gentle, does not sting, is anti-irritant, and can be used even on the most sensitive skin. It contains so much botanical goodness (e.g cucumber, papaya, chamomile. Pineapple, sugar maple, sugar cane, orange, lemon and  bilberry) packed with anti-oxidants, that some of my clients call this the anti-oxidant mask. This is also a great post-treatment as it soothes, hydrates and promotes healing, especially for laser treatment. I just came back from Redang with a sunburn and I use this everyday to comfort my skin. Chill it in the fridge if you like and apply it if you have puffy eyes.”

Sulfur Cooling Masque, RM268

“I’m very prone to breakouts, especially when I’m sick, don’t get enough sleep, stressed and when the air is hazy. Use this on the whole face or spot-treat your acne. When I have a big day coming, I would spot-treat any sudden zit, and leave it overnight. This totally calms and subsides it.”

Yes, the price tags of these products can be quite steep to some, but if you do feel like indulging your skin, you know where to go … you just might find me there too!

For a good cause: Kiehl’s & YAWA

GROUP

Two years ago, it was trendy to “go green”. Now, we all have a social obligation to sit up, and start paying attention to how we can do our bit to help the environment.

One of the beauty brands that’s a strong advocate on saving the planet is Kiehl’s, and it recently launched the YAWA-Kiehl’s “Save Our Rare Earth” Biodiversity Eco-Camp at the Bangsar Shopping Center, in conjunction with the opening of Khiel’s latest store at the shopping center.

The Save Our Rare Earth camp will be held form 13 – 15 November, 2009 at the Gunung Nuang camping ground in Ulu Langat. Targeted at youths aged between 10 to 17 years-old, the objective of the camp, says Kiehl’s, is to “equip our youth with a deeper environmental responsibility and awareness, and to ensure that they return to their communities ready to become agents of positive change.”

At the event, guests were given a chance to take a closer look at a mock-up of the eco-camp, and its planned activities. Actress Aishah Sinclair, who is also a member of the board of trustees for YAWA introduced a video montage she produced along with fellow celebrities promoting the eco-camp.

YAWA, or Yayasan Anak Warisan Alam has been a long-term partner of Kiehl’s, and is committed to educating the younger generation to love and care for the environment.

The Save Our Rare Earth eco-camp can accommodate 80 participants, including 30 underpriviliged childred sponsored by Kiehl’s. For more information, or if you’re interested to join or sponsor a child, please contact YAWA at 03-7842 6782.

Best Beauty Trends: M.A.C

dsquared2-fall-2009

Every year, during Fashion Week, I look forward to the beauty looks that the world’s best make-up artists whip up – I have my favourites, the charming Tom Pecheux, Dick Page, who is also the Creative Director of Shiseido, Peter Phillips (Chanel’s new Creative Director), Charlotte Tilbury, Linda Cantello (she who created YSL’s cult Touche Eclat) and of course, the amazing Pat McGrath. Just looking at their work sends chills down my spine – the way they transform models’ faces into works of art - they all have magic fingers!

These are the creative individuals you pay attention to, but when it comes to driving beauty trends every season, you’ve just got to give it to M.A.C.

The brand works with almost 200 designers at Fashion Weeks around the world, and create look after cool-look that are cutting edge and simply stunning to look at.

This Autumn/Winter, the brand released four key trends we should all be trying out.

The first one’s Lid Vicious, a clever homage to Sid Vicious. The looks are inspired by rock and roll and glamorous biker girls, and feature heavily smoked eyes – I love the way it was done at DSquared². For the look, Greasepaint Stick was applied all over the eyelid for a basic black ‘smear’ then Blue Brown and Violet Pigments were layered over top for an eye look with more ‘messy dimension.’

Carolina Herrera

Who’s That Girl isn’t just the title of a Madonna song, but also a M.A.C trend. Think strong Eighties looks inspired by Debbie Harry, electronica, you get the drift …

Emanuel Ungaro

To create the two-toned lip seen at Emanuel Ungaro, fill in the top lip with Morange Lipstick and the bottom lip with Violetta Lipstick.

The last trend is called Sculpture Club (so clever!), and it’s all about shading the face and highlighting. “It’s recreating that feel of ‘80s album cover beauty,” declared make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury.

I was given the opportunity to speak to the M.A.C Cosmetics senior make-up artist here in Malaysia, the super-talented Yokoe Chan (she gave me black lips!) on how to work the looks.

These are her words of wisdom.

  • For a modern, smoky eye, experiment with different textures of black. Complete the look by lining the inside of the eyes with a sheer, white eyeliner.
  • This season, use lip pencil to create precise, defined lips.
  • The way to sculpt your face now is not with dark/light make-up, but with clever use of highlighters. Picking the right shade is easy, use a bronze-gold if you are tan, or a pale gold or something with pink-based pearls if you are fair. A great alternative is the Strobe Cream.
  • When it comes to blending, you know you did right when you can’t see the colour anymore.
  • Coral lips are hot, and everyone can carry it off! Start with your favourite red, and mix it to look more orange till you find a shade you like. Or start with a nude lipstick and add a light peach or apricot.
  • When it comes to eyebrows, look for the colour closest to your hair colour. When you draw/fill in, the darkest point should be the arch, go medium at the tail and lightest at the thickest area of your brow.
  • With blusher, you can and should change the colour of your blusher. Smile, and start at the highest point, using the tip of the brush to apply in circular motions. At the end of the day, focus on your overall look – if you’re going for a sweet look, intensify your blush colour. Going goth? Then tone it down.
  • Use the runway looks as a reference. Look at the images, pick what you want to try, and adapt … so that you’re still you – on trend!
  • Finally, make-up should compliment, not match your clothes!
